CANNON MUSIC CAMP

Participants in Cannon Music Camp’s Vocal Studies program have a variety of opportunities to pursue their interest in singing, both individually and as a member of an ensemble.  The ASU Vocal Faculty, along with visiting faculty members, are in residency to provide all instruction and training.

Curriculum

Daily activities for voice students include:

Choral Ensembles - Vocalists may choose from two auditioned ensembles (Chamber Singers and Jazz Vocal) and two non-auditioned choirs (Concert Choir and Women’s Choir)

Voice Classes - classes designed to enhance aspects of individual performance, separate and apart from private study.  Class topics will be chosen and formatted from the following:  movement (Eurhythmics, Alexander Technique), diction, song literature, and stage presence.

Piano Class - a beginning level introduction to keyboard skills is open to students with no prior piano experience.

Music Theory - all Cannon Camp participants study the forms and structure of music at one of four levels, as determined by placement test administered at the beginning of camp session.

Additionally, all voice principals receive a one-hour weekly private lesson.  They also participate in a weekly masterclass as well as the various choral ensemble concerts that occur throughout the camp session.

Ensembles

Chamber Singers is an auditioned group of 16-24 singers that perform a variety of choral literature from all stylistic periods.  Auditions are held at the beginning of camp and are open to all campers.  The audition consists of vocalization (range testing), tonal memory, and sight singing.

Jazz Vocal Ensemble is comprised of 16-20 young vocal musicians and a rhythm section (piano, bass, drums).  This ensemble is devoted to performing a variety of traditional and contemporary jazz literature.  This includes everything from lush ballads, swing tunes and the blues, to Latin, pop and fusion pieces.  In addition to experiencing ensemble singing in styles representing groups such as the Manhattan Transfer, Take 6, and Singers Unlimited, these students will have the opportunity to develop their musicianship through the intense exploration of jazz melodies, harmonies, rhythm and improvisation.

Concert Choir is a non-auditioned group of 100+ singers and is open to all campers.  The Concert Choir performs a wide range of selections representing both classical and popular styles.

Women’s Choir  is a non-auditioned group of soprano and alto voices that perform music written specifically for treble voices.
